Software Development Engineer - Device Design & Simulation, Center for Quantum Computing

The AWS Center for Quantum Computing (CQC) is hiring a Software Development Engineer to develop our data applications and infrastructure with a focus on supporting device and architecture theory and device design. You will work closely with other Software Development Engineers, Research Scientists, and a Technical Program Manager.

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

Key job responsibilities:

  1. Work directly with scientists and engineers to understand their problems and propose workable solutions. Translate user stories into software design documents demonstrating sensible trade-offs between complexity and delivery.
  2. Implementation of design proposals in a logical and maintainable manner. Taking ownership over the stability and quality of the software stack by identifying, proposing, and implementing features that will accelerate our realization of quantum computing technologies.
  3. Identify bottlenecks, pain points, integration issues, and develop improvements to the design team's workflows.

We are looking for candidates with strong engineering principles, resourcefulness, a bias for action, superior problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills. Candidates should also possess a genuine curiosity and readiness to grasp the domain knowledge of our research scientists. Working effectively within a team environment is essential. As a software engineer embedded in a research organization, you will have the opportunity to work on new ideas and contribute to the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Example projects include:

  1. Build and maintain cloud infrastructure to facilitate physics simulation workloads.
  2. Develop a framework enabling research scientists to orchestrate and administer their simulations.
  3. Enhance the modeling and error estimation capabilities of simulation pipelines by incorporating advanced statistical techniques.
  4. Design database schemas modeling processes and artifacts of our processor design workflow.

Our engineers collaborate across diverse teams, projects, and environments to have a firsthand impact on our global customer base. You’ll bring a passion for innovation, data, search, analytics, and distributed systems. You’ll also:

  1. Solve challenging technical problems, often ones not solved before, at every layer of the stack.
  2. Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative software solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security.
  3. Build high-quality, highly available, always-on products.
  4. Research implementations that deliver the best possible experiences for customers.

A day in the life:

As you design and code solutions to help our team drive efficiencies in software architecture, you’ll create metrics, implement automation and other improvements, and resolve the root cause of software defects. You’ll also:

  1. Build high-impact solutions to deliver to our large customer base.
  2. Participate in design discussions, code review, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Work cross-functionally to help drive business decisions with your technical input.

About the team:

Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge-sharing and mentorship. Our senior members enjoy one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects that help our team members develop your engineering expertise so you feel empowered to take on more complex tasks in the future.

Diverse Experiences:

AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn’t followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don’t let it stop you from applying.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Experience programming with at least one software programming language.
  2. 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  3. 2+ years of non-internship experience in system design, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling aspects.
  4. MSc or PhD in a STEM discipline.
  5. Strong background in numerical computing, simulation, and data processing.
  6. Experience programming with Julia and Python.
  7. 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  8. Experience developing design verification and electronic design automation tools.
  9. Experience working with scientists in a research environment.
  10. Experience building software using AWS services.
