This role will involve designing and developing software products that impact many areas of our business. The individual in this role will have responsibility help define requirements, create software designs, implement code to these specifications, provide thorough unit and integration testing, and support products while deployed and used by our stakeholders.
About the team
MADS Reporting Engines team owns query engines and tier 1 services that provide query access to fresh, consistent campaign performance metrics across Amazon's ad products at scale. The services provide data to 100+ 1P clients including all advertiser-facing UIs and APIs that include campaign measurements.
Reporting Engines serve 685MM+ queries with 99.95% availability on 5.1+ Petabytes of data while continuously ingesting 450k+ metric updates/second and maintaining a data freshness SLA of 60 minutes for traffic and 90 minutes for purchase metrics. An SDE II in this team possesses an in-depth understanding of underlying storage and search technologies such as Elasticsearch, Elastic Map Reduce (EMR) and Iceberg.
SDE IIs work on our highly resilient and latency intensive Query Service, this service is an interface for all internal traffic to access their dimensional and performance metrics across all ad programs and cardinalities. You also work on our Control Plane, supporting creation, scaling and monitoring of Elasticsearch clusters in Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). You implement automated solutions to common Control Plane tasks deployments and upgrades while also supporting a friendly customer experience in a user-friendly front end.
An SDE II in this team seeks excellence in improving the team's operational and development processes, follows engineering best practices, and constantly improves. As the primary source for performance measurements, reporting engines is operationally intensive. You must have the technical depth to quickly identify the root cause of tickets, resolve the root causes of endemic problems, constantly seek opportunities for optimizations and innovations that reduce system availability risks, improve throughput, and reduce support costs.
As an SDE II, you are an influencer in team strategy, evaluating technical trade-offs between short-term business or operational needs and long-term technology requirements. You provide a service-wide perspective and guidance to shape the architecture of the service to meet the long-term needs of the business and systems. You participate in projects that support recurring business needs of customers or scalability of our systems.
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
