The Sustainability Manager brings extensive program management expertise, industry influence, and technical proficiency to shape forward-thinking real estate strategies. This role is responsible for orchestrating collaboration across up to 30 stakeholder groups, including technical, operational, engineering, critical security, and safety teams, to deliver integrated, sustainable facility designs. As a sustainability leader within the GSD team, the Sustainability Manager will define, resource, and drive key milestones that embed strategic sustainability goals into Amazon’s global real estate standards.
A successful Sustainability Manager must be able to work independently with internal and external teams to successfully manage difficult, cross-functional projects. These projects involve the collection and analysis of data supporting teams’ development of building strategies to deliver high quality results. The Sustainability Manager will partner with stakeholders to secure subject matter expertise, resources, scope development, prioritization, set milestones, and drive delivery to meet program goals. They must be proficient at transforming abstract and conceptual ideas into clear, consistent, and accurate deliverables. They will keep the scope of effort under control to accelerate progress by driving crisp and timely decisions, identifying and clearing blockers, and escalating appropriately. They will establish and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders, managers, and peers, recognizing discordant views and taking part in constructive dialogue to resolve them.
Key job responsibilities
- Collaborate Across Teams: Partner with cross-functional teams to influence real estate and construction decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
- Drive Sustainability Initiatives: Lead GSD’s sustainability partnerships, setting KPIs, integrating sustainable design, and aligning with Amazon’s environmental goals.
- Lead in Ambiguity: Navigate dynamic, fast-paced environments, spearheading initiatives and adapting strategies amid high ambiguity.
- Champion NA Sustainable Standards: Advance sustainable real estate standards in North America, collaborating with DPMs and GES to improve implementation rates.
- Influence Global Standards and Policy: Shape international industry benchmarks and policies through active participation in standards development.
- Develop Community Impact Plans: Implement strategies that foster positive social, economic, and environmental outcomes in real estate projects.
- Enhance Climate Resilience: Safeguard assets with resilience strategies that ensure operational continuity and adaptability to climate risks.

Global Realty delivers world-class solutions for Amazon’s WWOps organization. Within it, GSD pioneers building design, engineering innovation, and cost strategies exceeding industry benchmarks. GSD drives Amazon’s sustainable real estate vision, aligning with The Climate Pledge to decarbonize operations (Scope 1, 2, and 3), promote carbon-free energy, and enhance biodiversity globally. The team leads strategy for sustainable design, site selection, green leasing, and portfolio optimization while partnering with supply chains, developers, and landlords. GSD also develops AI tools to optimize sustainability planning, ensuring innovation and alignment with Amazon’s goals and business drivers.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, sustainable design, or similar
- 5+ years of experience in building design & construction projects
- 5+ years of demonstrated program/technical program management experience
- Experience with sustainable building standards and design processes
- Knowledge of technology implementation strategy and understanding in support of architectural innovation in the industry
- Experience procuring and managing consultants and vendors from RFP through project completion - Excellent communication skills, able to clearly define intent and drive solutions with multiple stakeholders
- Experience with large commercial and/or industrial building design and project management in all phases, including programming, design, and construction phases
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s or higher in sustainability, architecture, engineering, business administration, data science, or related fields
- Any of the following certifications: Active LEED Accredited Professional, Passive House Certification, Project Management Professional Certification, Architectural Registration, Professional Engineer Registration, CEM or other building professional accreditation or certification
- Experience in building portfolio management and/or corporate carbon reporting (e.g. GRESB, CRI, CDP, 2030 Challenge)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $133,800/year in our lowest geographic market up to $231,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
