The Last Mile Delivery & Technology team consists of: 1. programs used to deliver billions of packages to customers, 2. the underlying products and technology that are incorporated into delivery services, and 3. support services to drive innovation in how customers interact with the delivery process. We are looking for several Senior Principal Engineers to develop the technology roadmap for the organization. The Last Mile Technology domain has grown tremendously over the years and is showing no signs of slowing down. Efficient and accurate representation of the world helps drivers navigate routes safely. Capacity planning, scheduling, and building optimal routes are essential. Working with external delivery partners enables more deliveries to our customers.

Senior Principal Engineers are asked to venture beyond comfortable approaches to pioneer new spaces and inspire others as to what’s possible. They have strong technical judgment and influential skills to facilitate discussions for business-critical designs. Senior Principal Engineers operate at the Director, VP, and SVP level as key technical advisers. They provide both architectural guidance and detailed technical direction while nurturing a continuous delivery culture.

Key job responsibilities

  1. Serve as a technical leader on the most demanding, cross-functional projects.
  2. Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions.
  3. Fully and completely understand system inter-dependencies and limitations.
  4. Possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices.
  5. Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the community on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members.
  6. Balance technical leadership and savvy with strong business judgment to make the right decisions about technology choices.
  7. Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.
  8. Be a builder and an operator.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  1. 15+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  2. Experience with object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.
  3. Experience owning tech strategy, end to end delivery, and partnering with senior leadership.
  4. Proven ability to provide technical and strategic oversight for a high-performing global team of hundreds of engineers.
  5. 10+ years of mentoring and growing engineers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. 20+ years of deep hands-on technical expertise in building complex distributed systems.
  2. Experience solving customer and technical problems with durable, scalable solutions over multi-year, multi-billion dollar, and multi-organization impact.
  3. Desire and ability to inspire and influence at all levels, from engineering graduates to VPs, SVPs, and CTOs.
  4. Published research or patents in relevant technical areas.
  5. Master's or PhD preferred.
